Officials said one victim was found at the scene and taken for medical treatment before being airlifted to a hospital. Authorities have not released the victim’s condition. A spokesperson for the Department of Veteran’s Affairs confirmed that the victim was an employee at the clinic.

Dawkins called the situation “eye-opening.”

“We don’t have this often,” he said, before saying it was a “significant event” for the city.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed it would investigate the police shooting, which is standard procedure.

City officials described the area around the VA building as a controlled law enforcement scene and asked residents to avoid the area while investigators continue their work.

Authorities have not released the identity of the suspected shooter or additional details about what led to the incident. The case remains under active investigation, and officials say more information will be released as it becomes available.

The VA is working to reschedule appointments and ensuring that both veterans and staff have access to counseling and chaplain services.
