Ford Recalls 1.4M F-150 Pickup Trucks: What to Know | National News

Ford Motor Co. is recalling around 1.4 million F-150 pickup trucks in the United States after a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation uncovered a gearshift issue in the vehicles.

The NHTSA report cites unexpected downshifts that potentially led to two injuries and one accident.

The recall is for Ford F-150 trucks produced between March 12, 2014, and Aug. 18, 2017, with a six-speed automatic transmission.

A preliminary evaluation first opened in March 2025 over complaints related to F-150 trucks with a six-speed automatic transmission produced between 2015-2017, according to NHTSA.

The report describes the safety risk as connected to a lower gear that may cause an “abrupt wheel speed reduction for a short duration, which in some situations could cause the rear tires to slide until the vehicle speed slows.” This increases the risk of a crash.

Vehicle owners may be able to identify an illuminated malfunction indicator light or wrench light on the dashboard, according to the report.

How Do I Check if My Vehicle Has Been Recalled?

Beginning April 27, Ford will notify vehicle owners by mail with instructions to take their car to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have their engine and transmission software updated.

If not, a vehicle’s identification number can help. The 17-digit number located on the dashboard on the driver’s side can be inputted into Ford’s support website. The site will produce manufacturer-specific information about a vehicle and any potential recalls.

NHTSA also tracks all vehicle recalls. Cross check with the government website to ensure which cars are being recalled.

Where Do I Take My Recalled Vehicle to Get Fixed?

A Ford or Lincoln dealer is the best option. Vehicle owners can use the Ford dealer locator to find the closest option. Affected components may need to be updated or replaced.

Ford also offers remote and mobile services that will send a technician to a vehicle owner’s home.

Who Pays for Recall Repairs?

Ford is required to pay for all repairs. If a safety recall is administered, the manufacturer is responsible for fixing the vehicle at minimal cost.

“Manufacturers are required to fix the problem by repairing it, replacing it, offering a refund, or in rare cases repurchasing the vehicle,” NHTSA said.

How Often Has Ford Had Recalls?

Ford is no stranger to recalls. In 2025, the company had over 150 recalls on its vehicles, the most recalls notices by an automaker in one year. That doubled the previous record of 77 recalls set by General Motors.

Around 13 million Ford and Lincoln vehicles were affected, the most by any automaker. Information about Ford’s past recalls can be found here.
